C0019630 - MHC Class-II Proteins are non-covalently linked polymorphic alpha/beta transmembrane glycoproteins. The immunological function of MHC Class-II proteins is to bind and present antigenic peptides on the surfaces of cells for recognition by the antigen-specific T cell receptors of lymphocytes. These proteins plays an important role in the mediation of immune response. 2/10

Medical Subject Headings A0068359 AT38139378 Large, transmembrane, non-covalently linked glycoproteins (alpha and beta). Both chains can be polymorphic although there is more structural variation in the beta chains. The class II antigens in humans are called HLA-D ANTIGENS and are coded by a gene on chromosome 6. In mice, two genes named IA and IE on chromosome 17 code for the H-2 antigens. The antigens are found on B-lymphocytes, macrophages, epidermal cells, and sperm and are thought to mediate the competence of and cellular cooperation in the immune response. The term IA antigens used to refer only to the proteins encoded by the IA genes in the mouse, but is now used as a generic term for any class II histocompatibility antigen.

NCI NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms A7604576 AT197978818 One of a group of proteins found on the surface of white blood cells and other cells that play an important part in the body's immune response to foreign substances. These antigens vary from person to person, and human leukocyte antigen tests are done before organ transplantation to find out if tissues match between a donor and a recipient.
